Pogostemon octopus
Also known as: Octopus Plant, Star Pogostemon
Origin: Southeast Asia
Pogostemon octopus is a visually distinctive stem plant from Southeast Asia bearing long, narrow, bright-green leaves arranged in pronounced star-shaped whorls that radiate outward like the arms of an octopus or sea anemone. Each whorl creates a dramatic architectural effect that is unique among commonly available stem plants, making P. octopus an excellent specimen plant for the midground or background of larger planted aquariums. It grows at a moderate pace and is more forgiving than many specialist stem plants, tolerating medium light and adapting to a reasonable range of water parameters. Regular trimming encourages lateral branching and a denser, bushier appearance over time.
Light: Medium to high (35–50 PAR); whorled form develops best under good lighting. CO2: Beneficial at 15–25 mg/L; improves compactness and growth quality. Fertilisation: Regular comprehensive fertilisation; moderate nutrient demands. Placement: Midground to background specimen plant; works well as a single-species cluster. Propagation: Cut 10–15 cm top sections and replant; side shoots develop after trimming.
