Pogostemon quadrifolius
Also known as: Four-leaf Pogostemon
Origin: Southeast Asia
Pogostemon quadrifolius is a relatively obscure species from Southeast Asia characterised by its consistently four-leaved whorls that give each node a precise, geometric symmetry unusual among aquarium plants. The narrow leaves are bright to mid-green and create an attractive, structured vertical line that suits both Dutch and natural-style compositions. It is moderately demanding, preferring soft, slightly acidic water with CO2 supplementation for compact internodes and healthy growth.
Light: Medium (30–60 PAR); good light maintains compact internode spacing. CO2: Beneficial at 15–25 mg/L; improves compact form and growth rate. Fertiliser: Balanced NPK plus micronutrients dosed weekly. Planting: Background groups of 3–5 stems spaced 3 cm; trim every 2 weeks. Growth: Moderate; 20–50 cm; geometric leaf arrangement makes this a true collector's stem plant.
