Pogostemon yatabeanus
Also known as: Japanese Pogostemon, Fine Leaf Pogostemon
Origin: Japan / Korea
Pogostemon yatabeanus is native to Japan and Korea, growing in cool streams and ponds at higher elevations. Its whorls of fine, thread-like bright-green leaves closely resemble Myriophyllum in appearance, creating a lush, feathery background effect. Unlike most Pogostemon species, it tolerates cooler water temperatures, making it suitable for unheated aquariums in temperate climates. It is moderately easy to grow and benefits from CO2 supplementation for optimal density.
Light: Medium (25–55 PAR); adapts to moderate light; higher light increases density. CO2: Beneficial at 15–25 mg/L; improves growth compactness and leaf density. Fertiliser: Weekly balanced liquid fertiliser plus micronutrients. Planting: Background groups of 3–5 stems spaced 3 cm; trim every 2 weeks. Growth: Moderate; 20–40 cm; cool water preference distinguishes it from tropical species.
