Polygonum sp. "Sao Paulo"

Polygonum sp. 'Sao Paulo' originates from the waterways around Sao Paulo, Brazil, and is cultivated for the deep red to burgundy coloration of its lanceolate leaves. Unlike many red aquarium plants that require very soft acidic water and intense light for colour, Sao Paulo Red maintains acceptable colouration across a wider range of conditions, making it more approachable than Rotala or Ludwigia species. It is a vigorous grower that rewards regular trimming with dense, bushy regrowth and sustained vibrant colour.

Light: Medium to high; 45–70 PAR; colour deepens with more light. CO2: Beneficial; 15–25 ppm for compact growth. Water: pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard. Planting: Plant groups of 5–7 stems in the background; trim tops every 2–3 weeks. Growth: Fast; high-yield trimming plant; supplement iron for richest red tones.
