Pontederia cordata
Origin: North America
Pontederia cordata (Pickerel Weed) is one of the most attractive flowering marginals for the pond edge, producing dense spikes of blue-violet flowers from July to October above glossy heart-shaped leaves that rise clearly above the water surface. Extremely popular in Dutch and Belgian water garden centres for its long flowering season and lush tropical appearance. Plant in up to 20 cm of water for best results. Hardy throughout Belgium and the Netherlands with winter mulching.
Plant in aquatic basket in pond margin in up to 20 cm of water. Full sun for best flowering. pH 6.0–8.0. Hardy in Belgium/Netherlands; protect crown from hard frost with mulch. Divide clumps every 2–3 years as they can become vigorous. Remove spent flower heads to encourage continuous blooming through the season.
