Potamogeton crispus
Origin: Europe (native to Belgium and Netherlands)
Potamogeton crispus (Curly Pondweed) is a distinctive submerged oxygenating plant whose semi-translucent, wavy-edged, bronze-green leaves resemble ruffled seaweed and give it ornamental quality unusual among oxygenators. Native to Dutch and Belgian waterways and ditches, it is extremely hardy, actively growing in winter when other oxygenators are dormant — making it valuable for year-round wildlife pond oxygenation. A superb native plant for wildlife and conservation ponds.
Anchor in pond substrate or float in a basket. Thrives in partial shade to full sun in cool to warm water (4–25°C). pH 6.5–8.5. No CO2 or fertiliser required. Naturally dormant in summer in warm ponds but resumes strong growth in autumn through spring. Excellent for wildlife ponds as it provides winter oxygenation and cover. Trim if it becomes very dense.
