Potamogeton perfoliatus
Also known as: Clasping Pondweed, Perfoliate Pondweed
Origin: Europe / Asia / North America
Potamogeton perfoliatus is widespread across Europe, Asia, and North America where it grows in clear lakes and rivers. Its oval, translucent leaves clasp directly around the stem — a trait called perfoliate — giving the stems a stacked, spiral staircase appearance unlike most aquarium plants. It is a cool-water species best suited to temperate or cool-tropical aquariums and provides dense cover for fish when grown in groups. It tolerates a wide range of water hardness, making it broadly adaptable.
Light: Medium (30–55 PAR); grows well under standard aquarium lighting in cool water. CO2: Not required; performs adequately in low-tech cool setups. Planting: Plant stem groups of 5–7 in the background; space groups 10 cm apart for a natural look. Maintenance: Trim tops to prevent surface growth; remove lower leaves that lose colour. Note: Best suited to cool to warm temperate conditions (15–22°C); declines above 25°C.
