Proserpinaca palustris
Also known as: Mermaid Weed, Marsh Mermaidweed
Origin: North / Central America
Proserpinaca palustris is a fascinating stem plant from North and Central America that undergoes a striking metamorphosis when submerged: emersed leaves are simple and serrated while the submerged form develops deeply pinnate, feathery leaves that closely resemble a Myriophyllum. Under high light and CO2 injection in soft, slightly acidic water, these submerged leaves develop vivid orange to red colouration that makes P. palustris one of the most unusual and rewarding warm-coloured stem plants available. The combination of unique leaf transformation and excellent colour expression makes it a prized species for dedicated high-tech planted aquariums and aquascaping competitions.
Light: High (50+ PAR); essential for orange-red leaf colouration and pinnate leaf form. CO2: Required at 25–35 mg/L; induces pinnate submerged leaf form and vivid colour. Fertilisation: Iron and micronutrient dosing critical; phosphate should be maintained. Placement: Midground to background; distinctive due to unique leaf transformation. Propagation: Cut 8–12 cm tip sections; roots steadily under high-tech conditions.
