Proserpinaca palustris
Also known as: Cuba Mermaid Weed, Proserpinaca Cuba
Origin: Cuba, Caribbean
Proserpinaca palustris 'Cuba' is a geographically distinct form of Mermaid Weed that grows shorter and denser than North American collections, with finer leaf divisions and a more intense colour response. The Cuba form tends to stay under 20 cm when trimmed, making it far easier to integrate into the midground of mid-sized layouts where standard Proserpinaca would quickly outgrow its position. It is highly coveted in the IAPLC and AGA competition scene for the richness of its autumnal orange-red tones.
Light: High; 65–90 PAR; colour is most intense in the strongest light zone. CO2: Beneficial; 20–30 ppm for vibrant colour and compact, bushy growth. Water: pH 6.0–7.2, soft to slightly hard. Planting: Plant groups in the midground; trim tops every 3–4 weeks to maintain compact form. Growth: Moderate; bushy form maintained by regular trimming and replanting.
