Ranunculus aquatilis
Origin: Europe (native to Netherlands and Belgium)
Ranunculus aquatilis (Water Crowfoot) is one of the most attractive submerged pond plants, producing masses of finely divided hair-like underwater leaves combined with floating lobed leaves, and covering the water surface with small white buttercup flowers with yellow centres in late spring. Native to Dutch and Belgian waterways, it is excellent for wildlife ponds and invertebrate-friendly water gardens. Prefers cooler, clear water conditions.
Anchor in pond substrate or allow to float freely. Full sun for best flowering. pH 6.0–8.5, temperature 4–22°C (cool-water species). No CO2 or fertiliser required. Naturally semi-dormant in summer warm water; resumes growth in cooler temperatures. Excellent for dragonfly larvae, water beetles, and other aquatic invertebrates. Trim if growth becomes excessive.
