Nymphaea lotus
Origin: Tropical Africa
The Red Tiger Lotus (Nymphaea lotus red form) is a spectacular aquatic lily with large, deep crimson-red spotted leaves that make an unrivalled visual statement in the aquarium. Grows vigorously from a bulb and, if left untrimmed, will send floating leaves to the surface cutting off light below. Regular trimming of surface leaves maintains a submerged rosette form and encourages dense submerged growth.
Plant bulb in nutrient-rich substrate; leave upper half exposed. Medium to high light; CO2 beneficial for compact growth. pH 6.0–8.0, GH 2–15, KH 0–10, temperature 22–30°C. Dose root-zone fertiliser or use nutrient caps near the bulb. Trim any floating leaves promptly to maintain submerged form and prevent shading. Produces daughter bulbs; divide to propagate.
