Riccia fluitans
Also known as: Dwarf Crystalwort, Mini Crystalwort, Floating Crystalwort
Origin: Worldwide (cultivar selection)
Riccia fluitans 'Dwarf' is a tissue culture selection of the classic Crystalwort liverwort, chosen for its finer, more densely branched thalli and improved tendency to remain anchored to hardscape compared to the standard form. It produces the same spectacular oxygen pearling under high light and CO2, but the finer texture gives a more delicate, moss-like appearance when tied to rocks or driftwood. The tissue culture form arrives clean and free of competing algae. Like all Riccia it requires regular maintenance — thick mats must be thinned to prevent detachment and floating. Secure small portions with fine thread or a mesh net over hardscape. In high-tech setups it grows fast and needs trimming every one to two weeks. An iconic element in Nature Aquarium layouts.
Light: High CO2: Required for optimal growth and pearling Fertilisation: Macro and micro liquid dosing; carbon supplementation beneficial Placement: Foreground carpet tied to hardscape Propagation: Divide thalli; grows readily from small fragments
