Riccia fluitans
Origin: Cosmopolitan
Riccia fluitans is a floating liverwort made famous by Takashi Amano, who pioneered tying it to rocks and driftwood as a foreground carpeting plant. Its bright, vivid green tufts create a stunning underwater lawn effect when weighted down, and release photosynthesis bubbles under good CO2 and lighting. Naturally it floats and provides excellent surface cover for fry and shy surface fish. Easy to grow; does best with CO2 and good lighting but tolerates lower-tech conditions.
For carpeting: tie to mesh, rocks, or driftwood with cotton thread. High light and CO2 enhance pearl (bubble) effect. Regular trimming prevents die-off in lower layers. For floating use: simply add to water surface. Trim aggressively to prevent shading lower plants.
