Riccia rhenana
Also known as: Rhine Crystalwort, Dense Crystalwort
Origin: Europe
Riccia rhenana is a submerged liverwort closely related to Riccia fluitans but producing denser, more tightly branched thalli with a slightly deeper green colour. It has a stronger tendency to remain submerged and attach to hardscape than the common form, making it a preferred choice for aquascapers who want to tie it to rocks or driftwood for a natural, encrusted appearance. The tissue culture form ensures a clean, contaminant-free start. Like all Riccia species it produces spectacular oxygen pearling under high light and CO2 supplementation. It requires regular trimming to prevent thick layers from detaching and floating. Tie in small bundles with cotton thread, which degrades harmlessly as the plant attaches.
Light: High CO2: Beneficial–required for dense, submerged growth Fertilisation: Macro and micro dosing; carbon supplementation Placement: Foreground mat tied to hardscape Propagation: Divide thalli; regrows readily from fragments
