Rotala hippuris
Origin: Asia (Japan, Thailand)
Rotala hippuris is immediately recognisable by its whorls of narrow, needle-like leaves arranged around a central stem, giving the plant a uniquely architectural, pine-like appearance rarely seen in the genus. Subtle reddish tones develop under strong illumination, adding visual depth to planted scapes. Consistent fertilisation and slightly soft water encourage dense, upright growth suited to the middle and background of larger aquariums.
Provide high lighting and CO2 supplementation for compact internodal growth. Plant in nutrient-rich substrate and supplement with macros and micros. Soft to moderately hard water suits this species well. Trim stems regularly to encourage lateral branching. The distinctive whorled leaf structure makes it an excellent textural contrast against fine-leafed foreground plants.
