Rotala macrandra
Also known as: Blood Red Rotala, Blood Red Macrandra
Origin: Asia (cultivar/collection form)
Rotala macrandra 'Blood Red' is considered the ultimate colour form of the macrandra species complex, selected for producing uniformly deep, near-opaque blood-red pigmentation across all leaf surfaces. The large, heavily ruffled leaves have an almost velvety appearance under strong lighting, creating a visual density unlike any other stem plant.
All macrandra varieties are demanding, and 'Blood Red' is the most exacting. Soft water, very high light, stable and high CO2 levels, and a rich fertiliser programme are all essential. Even brief CO2 interruptions can cause significant leaf drop. Maintaining temperature at or below 26°C helps sustain the intense red colouration.
This cultivar is the centrepiece choice for Dutch aquascape competitions and for any aquascaper who wants the most dramatic red possible. Use it as a single dominant background column for maximum visual impact.
Light: Very high (80–120+ PAR); colour pales markedly below this threshold. CO2: Required at 30–40 mg/L; highest stable level of any Rotala; interruptions cause melt. Fertilisation: Iron 0.2–0.5 mg/L maintained; daily or every-other-day micro dose; EI regime preferred. Placement: Background focal column; 5–9 stems grouped tightly; trim every 7 days. Propagation: Trim to 12 cm tops and replant; avoid disturbing established root system.
