Rotala macrandra
Also known as: Green Macrandra, Giant Red Rotala Green Form
Origin: India (cultivar/collection form)
Rotala macrandra 'Green' is a colour-stable selection of one of the most iconic advanced stem plants in the hobby. Unlike the standard pink-red form, this variant holds bright emerald-green tones regardless of light intensity, while retaining the characteristic large, ruffled leaf margins that give macrandra its signature appearance.
This plant demands high light, injected CO2, and a rich nutrient programme to grow well. Without sufficient iron and micronutrients the internodes stretch rapidly, resulting in weak, sparse stems. Under optimal conditions it forms dense, leafy columns of vivid green that contrast beautifully with red Rotalas and Ludwigias in Dutch-style group plantings.
Regular trimming every 7–10 days keeps the plant compact and encourages lateral branching. Trimmed tops can be replanted immediately to propagate new stems. Soft, slightly acidic water is strongly preferred.
Light: High (60–100 PAR); lower light causes etiolation and leaf drop. CO2: Required at 25–35 mg/L; plant declines rapidly without consistent injection. Fertilisation: Dose iron and chelated micronutrients 2–3× per week; maintain NO3 10–25 mg/L and PO4 1–2 mg/L. Placement: Background; plant in groups of 5–7 stems spaced 2–3 cm apart. Propagation: Trim tops to 10–15 cm and replant; side shoots develop within 1–2 weeks.
