Rotala macrandra var.
Also known as: Japan Rotala, Rotala Japan
Origin: Asia (cultivar/collection form)
Rotala macrandra 'Japan' represents a carefully selected Japanese collection form noted for producing deeper, more consistently saturated red pigmentation than wild-type macrandra. The leaves are large with a pronounced ruffled margin and a semi-transparent, almost glowing quality under strong lighting.
Like all macrandra forms, it thrives only in high-light, CO2-injected, nutrient-rich setups. It is sensitive to low iron and will quickly lose colour or develop holes in leaves under deficient conditions. Soft water (GH below 8) and slightly acidic pH (5.5–7.0) are essential for long-term success.
In Dutch aquascapes it is used as a dominant red column in the background. In Nature Aquarium style it provides bold red contrast against green stem groups. Trim weekly to prevent light-shading of lower leaves.
Light: High (70–120 PAR); essential for full red coloration and compact growth. CO2: Required at 25–35 mg/L; fluctuations cause rapid leaf deterioration. Fertilisation: Iron 0.1–0.5 mg/L maintained; dose comprehensive micro and macros daily or every other day. Placement: Background; plant 5–9 stems in tight groups, trim tops every 7–10 days. Propagation: Replant trimmed tops 10–15 cm long; discard lower, bare stems.
