Rotala macrandra
Also known as: Mini Butterfly Rotala, Dwarf Macrandra
Origin: India (cultivar/collection form)
Rotala macrandra 'Mini Butterfly' is a dwarf selection distinguished by its notably smaller leaves compared to the standard form, each with a gently ruffled, butterfly-wing outline. Under high light and CO2 supplementation the foliage deepens to vivid pink-red, making this one of the most visually concentrated colour forms available.
Its more compact internodes and slower vertical growth make it easier to manage than full-sized macrandra, and it fits naturally into midground positions in medium to large aquascapes. It still demands the same high-tech conditions as all macrandra varieties.
Propagation is identical to other Rotalas: trim the top 10–12 cm and replant directly into the substrate. Dense planting of 5–9 stems per group produces the most impressive bushy effect.
Light: High (60–100 PAR); colour intensity is directly proportional to light level. CO2: Required at 25–35 mg/L; stable dosing prevents melt and poor leaf development. Fertilisation: Weekly iron and full micronutrient dose; EI or similar high-nutrient regime recommended. Placement: Midground to lower-background; group 5–9 stems 2 cm apart. Propagation: Cut tops at 10–12 cm, replant; roots develop within 5–7 days.
