Rotala macrandra
Also known as: Narrow Leaf Giant Red Rotala, Slender Red Rotala
Origin: India
Rotala macrandra 'Narrow Leaf' is a selected form of the spectacular Giant Red Rotala, producing noticeably narrower, more elongated leaves than the standard variety while retaining the same vivid crimson-red colouration under high light. The tissue culture form ensures the plant arrives free of algae and pathogens, which is particularly valuable for this demanding species that can be outcompeted by filamentous algae during establishment. It is among the most colouful red plants in the aquarium hobby, but requires intense lighting, consistent CO2 injection, and rich macro-micro fertilisation to achieve full colour. Soft, acidic water produces the best results. Growth is moderate and the plant benefits from regular trimming to maintain bushiness.
Light: Very high CO2: Required (25–30+ mg/L) Fertilisation: Heavy macro and micro dosing; iron critical for red pigmentation Placement: Background Propagation: Trim tops and replant; side shoots emerge from trimmed stems
