Rotala mexicana
Also known as: Mexican Toothcup, Mexican Rotala
Origin: Mexico / Central America
Rotala mexicana is a slender, fine-stemmed species native to Mexico and Central America that serves as the type species for the mexicana group, which includes several collector forms such as 'Goias'. Its tiny, oval leaves are densely packed along extremely slender stems, creating a delicate, intricate texture that resembles miniature Chinese calligraphy when grouped in the aquascape. Under high light and CO2 injection in soft, acidic, nutrient-rich water it develops warm pinkish to orange tones that make it a collector favourite. Growth is slow to moderate, requiring patience but rewarding the aquascaper with a refined, jewel-like appearance unlike any more common stem plant.
Light: High (50+ PAR); essential for pink-orange colour expression. CO2: Required at 20–30 mg/L; compact internodal growth depends on CO2. Fertilisation: Comprehensive iron-rich nutrient dosing; very soft water strongly preferred. Placement: Midground to background in high-tech setups; suited to Dutch-style aquascapes. Propagation: Cut 6–8 cm tips; slow to root but establishes steadily.
