Rotala mexicana 'Goias'
Also known as: Goias Rotala, Mexican Toothcup Goias
Origin: Brazil (Goias)
Rotala mexicana 'Goias' is an exceptionally rare collection form sourced from the Goias state of Brazil, representing one of the most sought-after specialty stem plants in the planted aquarium hobby. Its tiny, ovate leaves are arranged densely along slender stems and develop vivid orange-red pigmentation under intense lighting, creating intricate, jewel-like columns of warm colour. This species demands soft, acidic water alongside strong light and CO2 injection to perform at its best. Growth is relatively slow, which contributes to its rarity in the trade but also means it maintains its shape between trimming sessions, making it ideal for Dutch-style aquascapes.
Light: Very high (55+ PAR); essential for orange-red colouration. CO2: Required at 25–35 mg/L; significantly benefits colouration and compact growth. Fertilisation: Comprehensive micro and macro dosing; iron and manganese particularly important. Placement: Midground to background in Dutch-style tanks; striking in tight groups. Propagation: Trim 5–7 cm tip cuttings and replant; grows slowly but steadily.
