Rotala rotundifolia
Also known as: Roundleaf Rotala, Pink Rotala, Rotala
Origin: Southeast Asia (TC cultivar)
Rotala rotundifolia is native to Southeast Asia and is one of the most widely grown stem plants in the hobby, valued for its variable colouration — bright green under low light, transitioning to pink, coral, and vivid red under high light with CO2 injection. It is a fast-growing, easy-to-trim background stem plant ideal for adding colour and movement to planted aquariums. The tissue culture format ensures completely clean, algae-free stems, eliminating the most common complaint with conventionally grown Rotala.
Light: Medium to high; pink-red colouration only develops under stronger light. CO2: Beneficial; CO2 supplementation greatly enhances red colouration. Substrate: Nutrient-rich substrate; regular liquid fertiliser covering macros and iron. Planting: Rinse TC gel; plant bunches of 5–7 stems 2–3 cm apart in the background. Growth: Moderate to fast; trim tops regularly to prevent bottom shading and encourage bushy growth.
