Rotala sp. 'Bonsai'
Also known as: Bonsai Rotala, Dwarf Rotala
Origin: Southeast Asia
Rotala sp. Bonsai is a dwarf Rotala of uncertain origin characterised by its unusually compact internodes and tiny leaves that create a visually dense, layered effect reminiscent of bonsai foliage. Its restrained growth rate makes it manageable in small aquariums where faster Rotalas would quickly overwhelm the layout. Under good light the tiny leaves can take on a slight pink blush. It is most effective planted in tight groups to maximise the bonsai tree illusion.
Light: Medium (30–60 PAR); higher light adds subtle pink tones to leaves. CO2: Beneficial at 15–25 mg/L; improves compactness and leaf density. Fertiliser: Balanced NPK plus micronutrients dosed lightly weekly. Planting: Midground groups of 5–7 stems spaced 1–2 cm apart; trim every 2–3 weeks. Growth: Slow; 5–15 cm; compact internodes persist with regular trimming.
