Rotala sp. 'Mini Type I'
Also known as: Mini Type I Rotala, Compact Rotala
Origin: Southeast Asia
Rotala sp. 'Mini Type I' is one of the smallest-growing Rotala forms available in the hobby, prized for its extremely short internodes and tiny rounded leaves that develop pink to red pigmentation under moderate to high lighting. Originating from Southeast Asia, this collector form remains compact without frequent trimming, making it invaluable for nano aquascapes and detailed iwagumi layouts where scale is critical. It responds well to CO2 supplementation and soft, slightly acidic water, rewarding patient aquascapers with dense, jewel-like clusters of colour. Regular pruning encourages prolific lateral branching, increasing planting density over time.
Light: Moderate to high (30–50 PAR); stronger light deepens pink-red pigmentation. CO2: Highly recommended at 20–30 mg/L for compact growth and vivid colouration. Fertilisation: Dose comprehensive micro and macro nutrients weekly; iron particularly important. Placement: Foreground to midground in nano tanks; midground in larger aquascapes. Propagation: Trim stem tips 5–8 cm and replant; roots within days under good conditions.
