Rotala sp.
Also known as: Sunset Rotala
Origin: Southeast Asia
Rotala sp. 'Sunset' is a tissue culture stem plant named for its distinctive bicolour colouration — stems stay green toward their base while the growing tips develop warm shades of orange to pink, creating a gradient reminiscent of a sunset sky. This visual effect is most pronounced under high light with CO2 injection and iron-rich fertilisation. Growth rate is moderate and the plant stays reasonably compact with regular trimming. Plant in groups of 5–10 stems to create a bold colour statement in the mid-background zone. Tissue culture ensures a clean, algae-free start. The plant is more forgiving than other demanding red-orange Rotala varieties, making it accessible to intermediate aquarists.
Light: High CO2: Recommended for best colour Fertilisation: Iron-rich micro dosing; macro balance important Placement: Midground to background Propagation: Trim tops and replant; lower stem produces side shoots
