Rotala sp.
Also known as: Vietnam Rotala
Origin: Vietnam
Rotala sp. 'Vietnam' is an undescribed or informally named collection form gathered from Vietnamese waterways, valued by collectors for its intermediate characteristics between the fine-leaved wallichii and broader-leaved macrandra. The narrow, slightly curved leaves are arranged in whorls and shift from olive-green to warm reddish tones under intense light.
This species is not as widely available as mainstream Rotalas, and plants sold under this name may vary slightly depending on the collection source. It performs best in high-light, CO2-injected aquariums with soft, slightly acidic water, and rewards consistent nutrient dosing with compact, colourful growth.
Ideal for aquascapers seeking variety within the Rotala genus. Its intermediate size makes it useful in both background and lower midground positions depending on tank scale.
Light: High (60–100 PAR); reddish tones appear at higher intensity. CO2: Required at 20–30 mg/L; stable levels produce compact internodes. Fertilisation: Balanced NPK plus iron weekly; deficiency causes yellowing of lower leaves. Placement: Background to lower midground; group 5–7 stems with 2 cm spacing. Propagation: Trim tops to 10–12 cm and replant; lateral shoots form within 1–2 weeks.
