Rotala wallichii
Also known as: Pink Wallichii, Pink Needle Rotala, Whorly Rotala Pink
Origin: Southeast Asia
Rotala wallichii 'Pink' is a cultivated selection of the classic fine-leaved wallichii species, chosen specifically for its reliable soft blush-pink colouration that develops across the feathery whorled foliage even under moderate CO2 supplementation. Unlike the typical species, which requires high light for strong colour, this form shows appealing pink tones in less demanding conditions, making it accessible to a broader range of aquascapers. The needle-like leaves create an airy, delicate texture that complements bolder-leaved plants beautifully. It grows at a moderate pace and responds well to regular trimming, which encourages dense, bushy lateral growth.
Light: Medium to high (35–50 PAR); moderate light sufficient for pink tones. CO2: Beneficial at 15–25 mg/L; not strictly required but improves growth and colour. Fertilisation: Regular comprehensive dosing; slightly elevated iron maintains pink pigmentation. Placement: Background in nano to medium tanks; stunning in dense groups. Propagation: Cut 8–10 cm tip cuttings; roots readily within one week.
