Sagittaria isoetiformis
Also known as: Quill-leaf Sagittaria, Isoetes-form Arrowhead
Origin: North America (SE USA)
Sagittaria isoetiformis is a rare and unusual species native to sandhill ponds and streams of the southeastern United States. Unlike most Sagittaria it produces cylindrical, quill-like submerged leaves rather than flat, strap-like foliage, giving it a remarkably distinctive appearance resembling Isoetes or Eleocharis species. This makes it a fascinating choice for native North American biotope setups and unusual nano aquariums. It is slower-growing and slightly more demanding than common Sagittaria species, preferring soft, slightly acidic to neutral water with moderate light. Its compact size — typically under 20 cm — suits foreground and midground positions in smaller aquariums.
Light: Medium (30–60 PAR); brighter light produces tighter, more compact growth. CO2: Beneficial; supplementation helps maintain healthy growth in soft water. Fertilisation: Root tabs every 4 months; light liquid fertiliser every 2 weeks with emphasis on iron. Placement: Foreground to midground in nano or biotope tanks; group tightly for best effect. Propagation: Slow runner production; be patient and allow colonies to establish before dividing.
