About

Sagittaria subulata is native to the coastal wetlands, estuaries, and freshwater streams of North and South America, where it grows as a submerged grass-like plant in soft to moderately hard water. It is one of the few carpeting-style plants tolerant of higher pH and moderate hardness, making it an excellent choice for aquarists with typical tap water who want a lawn-like foreground or background plant without the complications of low-tech carpeting. Submerged, it produces narrow, flat, vivid-green blades up to 30 cm tall, though under high light and good conditions it stays considerably shorter and more compact. The plant spreads prolifically via underground runners, colonising available substrate efficiently over several weeks. In smaller tanks it may need frequent thinning to prevent it from overrunning the layout. Sagittaria subulata is widely used in community aquariums as a mid-ground accent, in South American biotope setups as an authentic native plant, and in low-tech planted tanks where most carpeting plants fail. It is one of the most sold and most recommended starter plants for planted aquarium newcomers.

Care Guide

Placement Suitable for foreground in smaller tanks or mid-to-background in larger setups. Plant individual blades 3–4 cm apart; runners will fill in gaps rapidly. In nano tanks, plant sparingly and thin regularly.

Lighting Adaptable from low to high lighting (15–80 PAR). Under low light it grows taller; under high light it stays shorter and more compact. Very forgiving regarding light intensity.

CO2 & Fertilisation CO2 injection is not required. A root-tab supplementation program in a basic gravel substrate supports healthy growth. Liquid fertiliser weekly provides additional nutrition. The plant is unfussy regarding nutrient levels.

Propagation Propagates freely via underground runners. Individual plantlets on runners can be separated and transplanted. One parent plant can generate dozens of runners over a season in a good environment.

Trimming Trim blades to desired height using scissors every 4–6 weeks. Thin runner colonies by removing excess plantlets to prevent overcrowding. In community tanks, regular thinning prevents the plant from blocking sightlines.
