Sagittaria subulata
Origin: North and South America (Eastern US coast, Caribbean)
Sagittaria subulata (Dwarf Sagittaria) is one of the most adaptable carpeting plants in the freshwater hobby, forming attractive grass-like lawns by spreading via stolons. It tolerates a remarkably wide range of conditions including hard water and low light, distinguishing it from most other foreground plants. Its modest height in brighter conditions and taller growth in lower light make it versatile across tank sizes from nano to large community aquariums.
Plant individual stems 2–3 cm apart in a nutrient-enriched substrate for best establishment. No CO2 required but supplementation accelerates spreading. Trim leaf tips if they grow too long in low-light conditions. Tolerates hard, moderately alkaline water — one of the few carpet plants compatible with hard-water tropical setups. Pull and thin runners periodically to prevent overcrowding.
