Sagittaria teres
Also known as: Quill-leaf Arrowhead, Slender Arrowhead, Cylindrical Sagittaria
Origin: North America (Eastern USA)
Sagittaria teres is native to sandhill ponds and coastal plain waterways of the eastern United States, where it grows in clear, often soft and slightly acidic water. Unlike all other aquatic Sagittaria, its submerged leaves are perfectly cylindrical and hollow — resembling quills or thick needles — rather than flat and strap-like. This makes it one of the most morphologically distinctive aquatic plants in the hobby, easily mistaken for Isoetes or Eleocharis. It is moderately demanding, preferring soft to moderately hard water with moderate light, and benefits from CO2 supplementation. Its compact upright leaves make it ideal for midground positions in North American biotope tanks and unusual nature aquascapes.
Light: Medium (30–60 PAR); cylindrical leaf form maintained consistently under moderate light. CO2: Beneficial; supplementation supports healthy growth especially in soft water. Fertilisation: Root tabs every 4 months; light dilute liquid fertiliser every 2 weeks. Placement: Midground in North American biotope or nature aquascape; groups of 5–8 for best effect. Propagation: Lateral runners produced slowly; allow colonies to establish fully before dividing.
