Samolus valerandi
Origin: Cosmopolitan (Europe, Africa, Americas)
Samolus valerandi (Seaside Brookweed or Water Pimpernel) is a compact rosette plant producing bright green, spoon-shaped leaves that grow happily both submerged and emersed. It is particularly popular in paludarium setups and as a foreground or midground plant in cooler aquariums. A cosmopolitan species found across Europe, Africa, and the Americas near streams and brackish coastal margins, it is a niche but increasingly common specialist shop plant in Belgium and the Netherlands.
Plant in nutrient-rich substrate in the foreground or midground. Thrives under medium to bright lighting but tolerates lower levels. No CO2 required. Prefers cool water (15–24°C) and performs best in temperatures lower than most tropical species, making it ideal for coldwater or unheated aquariums. Tolerates slightly brackish conditions. Trim outer leaves as they age.
