Sparganium erectum
Also known as: Bur Reed, Erect Bur Reed
Origin: Europe / Asia
Sparganium erectum is a robust wetland plant found across Europe and Asia in marshes, pond margins, and slow rivers. In paludariums and large open-top tanks it grows as an emergent plant, producing tall, sword-shaped leaves that rise well above the water surface and bear distinctive spherical, burr-like fruiting heads. Submerged portions remain lush and green, while emersed leaves provide a strong architectural accent. It is cold-hardy and can be kept outdoors year-round in temperate climates.
Light: High; requires bright light at the water surface and above for strong emersed growth. CO2: Not required; grows vigorously as an emergent plant without supplementation. Planting: Plant the rhizome in deep, nutrient-rich substrate at the tank margin or pond edge. Maintenance: Cut back emersed growth as needed; divide rhizomes when the plant becomes overcrowded. Note: Best suited to paludariums and open-top tanks; not suitable for fully closed, submerged setups.
