Sparganium erectum
Origin: Europe (native to Netherlands and Belgium)
Sparganium erectum (Branched Bur-Reed / Grote Egelskop) is a robust native aquatic of Dutch waterways and pond margins, producing erect strap-like leaves and branched flower stems bearing distinctive spiny spherical flower heads in midsummer. A classic component of naturalistic Dutch and Belgian vijver plantings, it provides excellent cover for waterfowl, amphibians, and aquatic invertebrates. Grows well in up to 30 cm of water at pond margins.
Plant in heavy loam or aquatic compost baskets at the pond margin in 0–30 cm of water. Full sun preferred; tolerates partial shade. Fully frost-hardy for Belgian winters. Divide clumps every 2–3 years to maintain vigour and prevent overcrowding. Can become very vigorous — contain in planting baskets in smaller ponds. Excellent for wildlife pond schemes.
