Staurogyne repens
Also known as: Staurogyne, Repens, Brazilian Staurogyne
Origin: Brazil (TC cultivar)
Staurogyne repens is native to the Rio Cristalino in Brazil and was introduced to the aquarium hobby in the early 2010s as an accessible alternative to carpet plants, growing low and bushy rather than creeping across the substrate. Its small, oval, bright green leaves form dense, compact clumps that work beautifully as a foreground bush or informal carpet. The tissue culture format guarantees contaminant-free plantlets that establish quickly, and its tolerance for low tech conditions makes it exceptional value for money.
Light: Medium; thrives under typical community tank lighting without CO2. CO2: Not required; one of the few true foreground plants that grows well without injection. Substrate: Nutrient-rich substrate or root tabs; benefits from iron-rich liquid fertiliser. Planting: Rinse TC gel; plant individual stems 2–3 cm apart; trim to promote bushiness. Growth: Moderate; trim tops to encourage lateral branching and a denser, lower habit.
