Staurogyne sp. 'Bihar'
Also known as: Bihar Staurogyne, Indian Staurogyne
Origin: India (Bihar)
Staurogyne sp. 'Bihar' is a rare collection form originating from the Bihar state of India, representing one of the few Staurogyne species outside Brazil found in the aquarium trade. It produces somewhat broader and more rugose leaves than the familiar S. repens, with a subtle bronze-green sheen that adds textural warmth not found in the Brazilian form. It grows in a similar low, spreading habit suitable for foreground and low midground use. Cultivation requirements are similar to S. repens, though this Indian form may show slightly greater tolerance for harder water reflecting its native habitat. A prized rarity for collectors seeking botanical diversity among low-growing stem plants.
Light: Medium to high (35–50 PAR); bronze sheen intensifies under good light. CO2: Recommended at 15–25 mg/L; beneficial for compact low growth. Fertilisation: Regular comprehensive fertilisation; nutrient-rich substrate preferred. Placement: Foreground to low midground; complements hardscape elements beautifully. Propagation: Cut side stems 5–8 cm and replant; regular trimming improves density.
