Stelis argentata

Stelis argentata is a pleurothallid orchid from the Andean cloud forests of South America, typically found growing as a twig epiphyte at elevations between 1,500 and 2,500 m. Its small, leathery leaves emerge from slender ramicauls and, when in bloom, each ramicaul produces an upright spike crowded with tiny silvery to pale-purple flowers that open simultaneously, creating a mist-like floral display. In paludarium conditions, it benefits from cool night temperatures and consistently moist roots.

As with all pleurothallid orchids, air movement is as important as humidity — stagnant wet air leads to rot, while moving humid air closely mimics cloud-forest conditions. Stelis argentata is one of the easier pleurothallids, tolerating slightly warmer intermediate temperatures than more specialist cloud-forest species, making it more accessible to paludarium keepers without specialised cooling equipment.

Light: Low-medium indirect; 1,000–2,500 lux; never expose to direct sun. CO2/Humidity: No CO2; humidity 75–90%; ensure continuous gentle airflow across the mount. Fertilisation: Weekly dilute orchid fertiliser (one-eighth strength) applied via misting. Placement: Mount on cork bark or sphagnum; position in a cool, well-ventilated upper zone of the paludarium. Propagation: Division when multiple growths have developed; each division needs at least three ramicauls.
