Leptodictyum riparium
Also known as: String Moss, Knotted Pearl Wort
Origin: Worldwide
String Moss (Leptodictyum riparium) is a cosmopolitan aquatic moss found across much of the northern hemisphere, growing along stream banks and submerged wood. Its long, slender stems with small, lanceolate leaves create a flowing, hair-like appearance unique among aquarium mosses. It is particularly effective attached to the top of driftwood where current will sweep its stems downward, mimicking a natural riparian environment.
Light: low to medium light; long stems help it reach available light naturally. CO2: not required; performs well in low-tech setups. Attachment: tie loosely to hardscape tops to allow stems to trail freely with water movement. Trimming: thin out excessively dense growth to prevent inner die-back; trim as needed for aesthetics. Growth: moderate; propagate by cutting and reattaching stem portions.
