Leptodictyum riparium
Also known as: Stringy Moss, Kisha Grass Moss, Willow Moss (sometimes)
Origin: Cosmopolitan
Stringy Moss (Leptodictyum riparium) is a widely distributed aquatic moss with an almost cosmopolitan range, found across multiple continents in clean freshwater environments. Unlike the structured, tiered fronds of Christmas Moss or the compact cushions of Fissidens, Stringy Moss grows with long, loosely branching stems that give it an appropriately wispy, flowing character. Individual stems can extend several centimeters, creating an informal, natural-looking mass that moves gently in water current. This unstructured growth habit makes it less suitable for formal, architectural aquascapes but highly effective in biotope and natural-style setups where a more relaxed, organic feel is desired. Its rapid growth rate is a notable characteristic — under moderate light and with CO2 supplementation, it grows faster than most aquarium mosses, making it excellent for quickly establishing green coverage or providing abundant spawning material for egg-scattering species. Shrimp and small fish fry take shelter readily within its loose, tangled stems. Stringy Moss is exceptionally tolerant of a wide range of water conditions, making it suitable for community tanks with diverse water parameter requirements. It can be left free-floating, attached to substrate, or tied loosely to hardscape. Attached specimens develop a slightly denser habit. Regular harvesting controls its vigorous growth and prevents it from shading other plants.
Placement and Use Stringy Moss can be left free-floating, loosely tied to driftwood or rocks, or weighted to the substrate with small stones. Free-floating bunches are especially useful as spawning mops. It thrives in all positions and requires no special anchoring technique.
Lighting Low to moderate light (10–30 µmol/m²/s PAR) is sufficient. Higher light accelerates growth noticeably but also increases maintenance frequency. A photoperiod of 8–10 hours is recommended.
CO2 and Fertilization CO2 is beneficial but not required. Without supplementation, growth is moderate. Liquid fertilizer supports vigorous health. This moss is relatively undemanding in its nutrient requirements.
Water Conditions Maintain pH 5.5–7.5 and temperature 15–26°C. Stringy Moss is exceptionally tolerant of varying hardness and pH, adapting to community tanks, coldwater setups, and tropical tanks alike.
Pruning and Maintenance Harvest or trim aggressively every 2–4 weeks to control its fast growth. Left unchecked, it can overwhelm smaller plants. Shake trimmed portions gently in tank water before removal to release sheltering fry.
Propagation Any fragment propagates readily. Simply place portions where needed — no additional technique required.
Common Issues Growth can become unmanageable quickly without regular harvesting. Detritus accumulates in loose stems — periodic gentle rinsing in tank water helps keep it clean.
