Lomariopsis lineata
Also known as: Subwassertang, Freshwater Seaweed, Round Pellia
Origin: Southeast Asia
Subwassertang 'Round Form' (Lomariopsis lineata) is a unique aquatic liverwort whose name means 'freshwater seaweed' in German — a reference to its strap-like, semi-translucent lobes that bear more resemblance to marine algae or seaweed than to a typical terrestrial liverwort. The 'Round Form' has distinctly more rounded, compact lobes than the standard form, creating a denser, more ball-like appearance.
Subwassertang requires no attachment — it simply floats freely, rests on hardscape, or accumulates in corners of the aquarium. This makes it one of the easiest aquatic plants to work with, requiring no tying, gluing, or substrate planting. In shrimp tanks it is especially valued as a refuge plant that grows without any special attention and provides dense, sheltering cover for juveniles.
The plant is entirely undemanding: it grows slowly in low light without CO2, tolerates a very wide range of water conditions, and is essentially impossible to kill through neglect. It does not require trimming, simply growing in proportion to available nutrients. In breeding setups it serves as a functional refuge; in display tanks it can be arranged as a naturalistic accent on the water surface or against the back glass.
Light: Low; grows without strong lighting — 10–30 µmol PAR is sufficient. CO2: Not required; one of the most low-maintenance aquatic plants available. Fertilisation: Not essential; grows using ambient nutrients from fish waste in established aquariums. Placement: Float freely, rest on hardscape, or loosely drape over wood; no attachment required. Propagation: Simply divide the thallus into pieces; each fragment will grow independently.
