Syngonanthus macrocaulon
Also known as: Giant Syngonanthus, Giant Pipewort
Origin: South America
Syngonanthus macrocaulon is one of the largest members of the Eriocaulaceae family cultivated in aquariums, capable of producing grass-like leaves up to 50 cm long that billow gracefully in gentle current. It is native to soft, blackwater habitats in South America and demands the same challenging parameters as its Tonina and Eriocaulon relatives. Given adequate space and optimal conditions it becomes a spectacular background centrepiece, its arching form contrasting beautifully with rigid hardscape elements like stone and wood.
Light: High; 70–100 PAR; position under the strongest zone of your lighting fixture. CO2: Required; 25–35 ppm for sustained growth and leaf integrity. Water: pH 5.0–6.5, very soft (GH 0–4), near-zero KH. Planting: Plant individual rosettes into fine substrate; allow generous space around each plant. Growth: Slow; a long-term investment plant — stable parameters are essential.
