Taxiphyllum alternans
Also known as: Taiwan Moss
Origin: Asia (Taiwan)
Taiwan Moss (Taxiphyllum alternans) originates from Taiwan and is closely related to Java Moss and Christmas Moss within the Hypnaceae family. It distinguishes itself through fronds that are more flattened and regularly branched than Java Moss, with leaves arranged in a slightly alternating pattern along each stem. This produces a neat, slightly drooping growth habit that creates graceful arching clusters when attached to driftwood, evoking the appearance of hanging ferns or willow-like cascades in the aquascape. Taiwan Moss grows at a moderate pace — faster than Fissidens but slower than Java Moss under identical conditions — and is well-suited to both low-tech and CO2-injected setups. It performs particularly well when draped over the edges of rocks or the arching roots of driftwood, where gravity complements its natural growth direction. Like all aquarium mosses, Taiwan Moss serves as excellent cover for shrimp, fry, and small invertebrates, harboring biofilm and micro-organisms that enrich the tank's biodiversity. It is relatively forgiving of water parameter fluctuations and does not demand pristine conditions to survive, though it grows more vigorously and with greater structural definition in cleaner, well-oxygenated water. CO2 supplementation noticeably improves its density and the definition of its characteristic alternating frond arrangement. Regular trimming keeps growth neat and allows light to penetrate inner layers.
Placement and Attachment Tie Taiwan Moss to driftwood roots, angled rocks, or mesh panels. It works especially well cascading downward from elevated hardscape or draping over rock edges. Cotton thread or gel glue are both effective for initial attachment.
Lighting Low to moderate light (15–35 µmol/m²/s PAR) suits this moss. Better light intensifies the neat alternating frond pattern. Maintain a photoperiod of 8–10 hours.
CO2 and Fertilization CO2 injection improves growth density and structural definition. Apply balanced liquid fertilizer weekly. Keep macronutrient levels moderate to avoid algae pressure.
Water Conditions Prefers pH 5.5–7.5 and temperature 15–26°C. Adaptable to a broad range of hardness levels. Consistent water changes maintain the clean conditions that encourage best growth.
Pruning and Maintenance Trim outer fronds every 3–4 weeks to maintain shape and encourage new growth from the base. Use fine scissors; remove dead brown inner material manually.
Propagation Fragment and re-attach portions as needed. Growth rate is moderate, making propagation straightforward.
Common Issues Algae infiltration and inner die-back from light deprivation are the primary concerns. Regular trimming and good water circulation address both issues.
