Taxiphyllum alternans
Also known as: Taiwan Moss
Origin: Taiwan, Asia
Taxiphyllum alternans, commonly known as Taiwan Moss, is a high-quality aquascaping moss native to Taiwan whose fronds are arranged in a precise alternating pattern along each stem. This regularity of arrangement gives the moss a notably tidy, organised appearance compared to more randomly branching mosses — individual fronds interlock cleanly, forming dense, structured layers.
Taiwan Moss grows at a moderate pace and is tolerant of a wide range of water conditions, though it performs best in cooler water (20–25°C) and with supplemental CO2 for maximum density. Without CO2 it grows more openly but remains healthy and presentable. It attaches readily to driftwood, stone, and mesh.
This species is particularly popular for moss walls and detailed stone compositions where its organised frond arrangement creates a visually coherent texture. It is also effective as a free-form draping moss on driftwood, where its alternating frond structure creates a layered, fern-like appearance.
Light: Low; 15–40 µmol PAR suits this species well — adequate for all low-tech setups. CO2: Beneficial; CO2 supplementation produces noticeably denser, more tightly packed frond growth. Fertilisation: Light weekly liquid fertilisation; micronutrients and potassium are most important. Placement: Tie to driftwood or stone; also effective on mesh for moss walls. Propagation: Cut and reattach any portion of the moss; pieces as small as 2 cm establish reliably.
