Taxiphyllum barbieri
Also known as: Java Moss, Singapore Moss
Origin: Southeast Asia
Taxiphyllum barbieri is the correct scientific name for what is universally sold in the hobby as Java Moss — the most widely kept aquatic plant on earth. Listing it under its proper taxonomic name acknowledges its botanical identity while its common name has been in widespread use for decades. The plant itself is identical: fine, interlocking bright-green stems forming lush cushions on any surface in virtually any conditions.
Java Moss / T. barbieri grows on driftwood, rock, mesh, substrate, and free-floating in the water column. Under low light it remains open and loosely textured; under moderate light it tightens into a dense, lush mat. It tolerates cold through tropical temperatures, hard or soft water, and grows without CO2 or fertilisation, though both accelerate growth considerably.
In the aquarium hobby, Java Moss serves more roles than any other single plant: foreground carpet, moss wall, driftwood cover, surface float, spawning mop, biological filter medium, fry shelter, and shrimp foraging habitat. It is the single most recommended plant for any beginner and remains indispensable even in expert setups.
Light: Low to medium; grows in almost any light level from deep shade to moderate illumination. CO2: Not required; CO2 accelerates growth and produces denser, more vibrant cushions. Fertilisation: Not essential; occasional liquid micronutrient dosing improves colour in low-nutrient setups. Placement: Attach to any surface with thread, glue, or pins — or float freely for breeding and shrimp use. Propagation: Any portion of any size can be separated and relocated; regrowth is virtually guaranteed.
