Taxiphyllum sp. 'Flame'

Taxiphyllum sp. 'Flame' is a visually distinctive aquarium moss whose stems grow predominantly upright with a pronounced spiral twist, creating the appearance of rising, twisting flames when attached to hardscape. Unlike most mosses that spread laterally or droop downward, Flame Moss has a strong upward growth orientation, making it uniquely effective for adding vertical texture to a layout.

Cultivation is straightforward: Flame Moss is tied or glued to driftwood, stones, or mesh frames and grows slowly but steadily under low to medium light without requiring CO2 supplementation. It tolerates tropical temperatures well and performs across a wide range of water chemistry. Regular trimming maintains the flame-like form — if allowed to grow too long, individual stems begin to lose their twisting shape.

Flame Moss is most effective on the sides of tall stones or on the surface of driftwood positioned at a slight vertical angle, where gravity and the natural upward growth orientation combine to exaggerate the flame effect. It pairs beautifully with downward-drooping Weeping Moss on the same structure.

Light: Low to medium; 15–40 µmol PAR — the upright twisted form is maintained across a wide light range. CO2: Not required; the characteristic twisting growth is inherent and does not depend on CO2 levels. Fertilisation: Occasional liquid micronutrient dosing; demand is low. Placement: Attach to vertical or angled hardscape surfaces to maximise the upward flame effect. Propagation: Cut stem portions of 2–3 cm and reattach; reattachment and re-establishment is slow but reliable.
