Taxiphyllum sp. 'Spiky'
Also known as: Spiky Moss
Origin: Southeast Asia
Taxiphyllum sp. 'Spiky' is an aptly named aquarium moss distinguished by its stiff, outward-pointing, pointed fronds that radiate from the stems in all directions rather than lying flat or drooping. The overall texture is bristly and wild-looking, resembling a natural hedgehog or sea urchin form when grown as a compact clump. This character makes it a highly effective plant for creating a naturalistic, untamed aesthetic on hardscape.
Cultivation is straightforward — Spiky Moss attaches to hardscape with thread or glue and tolerates the full range of typical aquarium conditions without requiring CO2 supplementation or intense lighting. Growth is slow but the plant is very resilient. It stays relatively compact and does not spread aggressively.
In aquascaping, Spiky Moss is particularly effective on jagged or angular stones where its bristling form echoes the sharp geometry of the hardscape. It also works well on rough driftwood surfaces. Combining it with drooping mosses like Weeping Moss or flat-spreading mosses like Peacock Moss creates layered, contrasting textural compositions.
Light: Low; 15–35 µmol PAR — slow growth makes this moss vulnerable to algae under very intense light. CO2: Not required; grows steadily in low-tech conditions. Fertilisation: Occasional liquid micronutrient dosing; demand is very low. Placement: Attach to angular stones or rough driftwood in foreground or midground; the spiky form is best against a clear background. Propagation: Cut portions of 2–3 cm and reattach; growth from cuttings is slow.
