Nymphaea lotus
Origin: Africa and Southeast Asia
The Green Tiger Lotus (Nymphaea lotus) is a spectacular aquatic lily that grows from a dormant bulb to produce large, arrow-shaped green leaves with dark reddish-brown spots, unfurling impressively to create an instant centerpiece in the aquascape. Left unchecked it will send floating lily pads to the surface, shading lower plants; regular removal of surface leaves redirects energy into beautiful submerged growth. Fast-growing and easy to cultivate with medium lighting.
Plant the bulb partially in the substrate, leaving the top half exposed. Medium to high lighting encourages vigorous growth. CO2 injection and fertilization benefit long-term growth but are not essential. Pinch off surface-bound leaves regularly to maintain submerged leaf growth and control spread. Dormant periods may occur — do not discard the bulb; it will re-sprout. Propagate via bulb offsets.
