Nymphaea zenkeri
Origin: West Africa
The Red Tiger Lotus (Nymphaea zenkeri) is a spectacular bulb plant from West Africa that sends up large, arrow-shaped leaves with striking dark red-purple spots against a vivid red-maroon background. It grows vigorously and can produce impressive surface lily pads if surface leaves are not pruned, but with regular pinching it can be managed as a compact, impressive midground or background specimen. A show-stopping plant that is a staple of specialist aquarium shops across Belgium and the Netherlands.
Plant the bulb half-submerged in nutrient-rich substrate. Medium to high lighting encouraged but not essential. CO2 and fertilization accelerate growth significantly. Remove surface leaves regularly to direct energy to submerged growth and prevent shading other plants. During dormancy the bulb may rest — do not remove it; regrowth is triggered by consistent conditions. Propagate via bulb offsets.
