Tillandsia ionantha
Also known as: Sky Plant, Blushing Bride Tillandsia
Origin: Mexico, Central America
Tillandsia ionantha is arguably the most widely kept air plant in the world, and for good reason: it is compact, nearly indestructible in humid conditions, and produces a spectacular flush of scarlet and purple as it approaches bloom, at which point vivid violet flowers emerge from the centre. In paludariums it excels as a fill-in accent on driftwood, stones, and cork bark, requiring nothing more than secure attachment and regular misting.
As a true epiphyte, T. ionantha absorbs water and nutrients entirely through trichomes on its leaf surfaces, meaning it will rot if its base remains wet or buried. Good air circulation combined with high humidity — the conditions naturally present in a well-maintained paludarium — closely mimics its native cloud-forest habitat. After flowering, it produces multiple pups that can be separated to create a spreading colony.
Light: Bright indirect; 3,000–5,000 lux; direct sun causes leaf scorch. CO2/Humidity: No CO2; mist thoroughly 2–3 times per week; allow leaves to dry within 4 hours. Fertilisation: Apply dilute bromeliad or orchid fertiliser (quarter strength) monthly via misting. Placement: Glue or tie base to driftwood or cork bark; never bury the base; ensure good airflow around the plant. Propagation: Remove pups once they are at least half the parent's size; reattach to hardscape.
